We all are concerned over pesticide residues on our food. But we rarely think about the person spraying those chemicals.
As India fights to double food production by 2050, pesticides are a necessary evil. Yet a silent crisis is unfolding in our farmlands—farmers slowly poisoning themselves because either they lack knowledge or take it casually as how to stay safe while applying pesticides.
They Don’t Know What’s Entering Their Bodies
Walk into any field during spraying season. You’ll see bare arms, uncovered heads, no masks—almost zero protection. Farmers think covering their mouth is enough.
They’re wrong.
Pesticides don’t just enter through breathing or swallowing. They seep through the skin. Scientific studies on parathion show absorption rates that will shock you:
The genital area absorbs 100% of the pesticide it touches. Armpits absorb 64%, ear canals 40%, forehead 36%, scalp 32%, back of the hand 21%, abdomen 18%, palms 12%, and feet 13%.
The most vulnerable parts of the body are left completely exposed.
Why Won’t They Cover Up?
Simple: They don’t know any better.
Since 2009, the Institute of Horticulture Technology has trained thousands of farmers. When asked where they get spraying advice, the answer is almost always the same:
“The shopkeeper.”
This is dangerous. Dealers push what they stock, not what’s safe. And most know little about protective equipment.
During my Ph.D. in Himachal Pradesh, a farmer stripped to his underwear before spraying. His reason? “I’ll save time and soap on washing clothes.” He only learned his lesson after poisoning symptoms landed him in a hospital.
The ‘Macho’ Trap Is affecting farmers adversely
Some farmers boast about spraying without protection. They think it shows toughness.
It shows ignorance.
Simple Solutions, Big Impact
We don’t need expensive technology. We need:
- Basic gear – Masks, gloves, long sleeves, head and eye covers
- Real training – Not shopkeeper advice, but proper extension programs
- Changed attitudes – Real strength is protecting your family

Every farmer deserves to come home healthy after application of pesticides
The solution isn’t complicated: knowledge, affordable protection, and a shift in mindset.
The question is—will we act before it’s too late?
